The estate vineyards of Opus One, comprised of four parcels, sit in the western portion of the famed Oakville AVA in Napa Valley. Crane Vineyard has been owned and managed by Beckstoffer Vineyards since 1997, and it features deep. My guess is that it will be a more long-lived version of the voluptuous 1997 Opus One. It is lush, concentrated, and intense - but somewhat difficult to judge (its future development) at this point. Interestingly, it wasn’t until relatively recently, in 2012, that Opus One opened a sales and distribution office in Bordeaux a surprisingly late development considering joint owner Mouton Rothschild operates a major Bordeaux negociant company. Powerful yet harmonious, the 1997 promises a long life in the bottle. Opus One enjoys global appreciation, with a keen following in particular in Japan and France. Showing supple tannins, its silky-smooth palate accompanies flavors of blackberry-cassis, clove and roasted coffee. Guided by the vision of our founders, winemaker Michael Silacci combines intuition and technical acumen with the dual perspective of viticulturist and winemaker. From tasting berries to careful sorting and extended aging in new French oak barrels, each stage of the winemaking process is afforded the same meticulous consideration and attention. After 18 months, the Opus One wine is bottled and held an additional 15 months until release on October 1st each year. The 1997 Opus One offers concentrated aromas of vanilla, licorice, sandalwood and toasty oak.
